Nine frame analysis- Seven 1

Nine frame structure analysis of thriller film openings

The nine frame structure for Seven has been made to show the audience how the opening of a film has been constructed and how it engages with the viewer. As shown in the picture there are  9 different camera shots and I will analyse how they have been put together to make a effective thriller film opening.

1. The first shot establishes the films institution which it new line cinemas. Close up of the spine of the book
2. The second shot states the directors name. By establishing his name first it suggests that he needs to most attention as his role was the most important in the film.
3.  Razor blade scraping skin off finger, this is very unusual which freaks out the audience members and shows that the character is perhaps deranged
4. Box and old type writer- typical for horror movies due to the creepy yet subtle sound that a typewriter makes, it's also more effective than writing on a piece of paper of typing on a laptop/computer or even a phone.
5. This shot shows paper, pictures and ruined fingers to give off a creepy vibe and a fear of who the man is that has all of this and why.
6. Picture of boy with eyes crossed out which suggests that the character has some bad feelings which suggests that the storyline may be about revenge.
7. Tape with nails attached across it to show danger and damage, which makes the audience scared of what the man will do next, as he is clearly insane
8. Needle and thread going through paper which is a strange and creepy as it's unusal.
9. Cut into paper and cut through the word God, may suggests that the movie is something to do with the creepy mans beliefs.

TITLES

The student is late for detention and walks through the school to find his teacher waiting for him who is angry with his behaviour at school today.

Int. classroom - evening

The student has to come back for detention after school. He is late and the teacher yells at him but student doesn't care. The teacher then walks out of the room. The student then refuses to stay back and leaves the classroom. Then no one is around the school and he starts to hear strange noises and see shadows on the wall and thinks he is being chased. He runs inside a classroom and tries to hide. Then as he checks for a clear coast the door gets locked and he gets trapped in the room. He sees people walking around and tries to call for help but unfortunately he cannot be heard.

I will ignore the fact that you are late because it's a miracle you even showed up. Oh and this is the last time I want to see you here in detention.

Pre-Production

Making props

Today we attempted to make realistic blood that we could use for the murder that occurs in our horror movie opening. We mixed golden syrup with washing up liquid and then poured food colouring into the mixture. We then had a go at throwing the blood and seeing how realistic it looked on a body suit. I feel like this process was very successful and helpful as we will be using this to create blood for our horror opening. Here are a few photos of how our experiment went:

He feels as if the film does have creepy moments however, it misses the star moments , it is too misty and the audience don't have enough to hold on to.

Infact on the first on Januray I took the libity of going to watch the new Women in Black . James King and I shared similar beliefs . Personally, I believed that the film didnt break much to the table , I strongly feel the film had a lot pressure due to the fact that the first film proved to be a massive success in the Uk and the USA.

Horor film review

Try this for a hellish combination: Ouija is brought to you by pulp mogul Michael Bay, toy manufacturer Hasbro and Jason Blum, producer of the Paranormal Activity series. This is a listless tale of young suburbanites who tangle with the eponymous apparatus for contacting spirits, a baleful device that we learn you must never, ever mess with (although Hasbro offers a glow-in-the-dark version for around 30 quid). The bumps and thumps are mechanical, the young stars insipid and the otherworldly entity the kids contact is called Doris. Given that the film has taken more than $20m in its first week in the States, I suppose we should gird ourselves for a sequel. But seriously – can you imagine queuing for “Ouija 2: The Return of Doris”?

Here the reviewer comments about the plot of the film. He also makes a brief reference of how well Ouija did within the first week , it states the took over more than $20 million dollars. 

This reviewer believes that due to the positive feedback it has received in the first week there is due to be a sequel(follow up movie). 

However, surprisingly enough it was rated 1/5 by the Guardian is jusoes to show that there is differences within tastes . The UK are clearly not fond of this film but in the USA it is generating a high volume of sales.

For my questionnaire I asked 20 people to fill out my questionnaire, 10 who women and 10 males. The age range of the men and women that I asked was 14-21 years old. Here are some of the results that were most reliable and useful for us to make our horror film opening.

Expectation of a genre

Audience research can be referred to as the basics behind a project where individual preferences are taken to consideration in order to reach a specific target audience .

The conjuring(Annabelle) is an interesting movie statistically and film wise.

It's target audience ranges from age 15-24 with 69%.With 54% of these audience being females and 46% being males with C1 class leading with 46% followed by C2 (24%)This can be related to the fact that Annabelle is about a doll  and girls or teens plays with dolls most often therefore girls or women in general have more interest in the film than males  as they can best sympathize with the characters.


The haunting in connecticut.this film has a lead percentage of 56 for males and 44% for females.This suggests that there are elements that intrigues males more than females in this movie.The suspense the movie creates in audience has resulted in a huge target from age 15-24 leading with 56% with 45+ being the third largest age group.This could be the older generation could correlate to the events that happens in the movie .Category C1 leading with 47%AB (28%) with the least class being C2(5%)

INSIDIOUS

This film has a central villain(an old woman)  and therefore it has a large target audience of females leading with 54% and 46% for males.

One thing that stands still is the targeted age group for all of the 3 movies I chose. The wider audience ranges from 15-24.Insidious has 69% with 19%(25-34) and last but not least class C1 comes first with 46% and 12% for class AB.

Genre Research

Statically it has been proven that the British public are quite fond of Horror.

In 1975 an Animal themed horror film named ‘Jaws’ was released in the UK , and in 2014 it was named number 8 out of the ‘Highest grossing box office films’.

 Personally I feel that’s because society has adapted and companies have noticed that young people are the future and how they can make a lot of money from animation.

Avatar is an animation and it was placed above Jaws which goes to show you the horror genre may not be that popular in the UK.

Here Horror is the tenth category and as you can tell this box office ratings is quite low in comparison to Action and comedy .
